What Is Noopept?
Noopept is a single ingredient and it appears to be quite a potent one. But, there are more well tested nootropics out there.
Noopept, also known as N-phenylacetyl-L-prolylglycine ethyl ester, is a nootropic compound developed by the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
Best Nootropic Supplements
It is a derivative of the well-known nootropic, piracetam, but with some theoretical advantages.
Unlike piracetam, the theory is that noopept can produce significant effects at much lower doses, making it more potent and efficient.
It is believed to work by increasing acetylcholine signaling in the brain, while also boosting the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These actions help protect the brain from glutamate toxicity and enhance inhibitory neurotransmission.
The main issue with noopept is that there aren't a lot of trustworthy studies or suppliers. There has been only one human trial so far, this was conducted on a small group of people with mild cognitive impairment following a stroke. The results were positive, but it has not been replicated.
The animal studies look promising and with a similar mechanism to priacetem there is some arguement that things will translate to humans, but as most animal studies do not work out, we wouldn't recomend noopept currently. Although there are a decent amount of anecdotal noopept reviews. The fact is there's a whole list of other nootropic supplements with a lot more scientific backing in humans that we'd recommend before noopept.
It is currently available on Amazon but not all of these products are third party tested for purity.
How Does Noopept Work?
NB. Remember all this information is from animal studies. This is theory, this does not mean it will work in humans and most animal studies are not replicatable in humans.
Noopept exerts its effects through multiple mechanisms of action in the brain. It increases acetylcholine signaling, which plays a crucial role in learning and memory. By enhancing acetylcholine activity, Noopept improves cognitive processes such as information retention, recall, and overall mental performance.
Furthermore, Noopept increases the expression of NGF and BDNF, two neurotrophic factors essential for the growth and survival of neurons. NGF promotes the growth, maintenance, and repair of nerve cells, while BDNF supports synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. By boosting the levels of these neurotrophic factors, Noopept enhances brain health, promotes neural regeneration, and protects against neuronal damage. [2,3]
Noopept also modulates glutamate activity in the brain. Glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, but excessive glutamate can lead to neuronal toxicity. Noopept helps protect against glutamate toxicity by regulating its activity, preventing overexcitation of nerve cells and subsequent cell death.
Noopept user reviews on Amazon
Customers Noopept reviews are normally quite positive, with noopept products normally scoring between 4-5* on third party platforms.
There is a reasonable arguement that the nootropic works as it claims. However, it should be noted that when it comes to nootropics we never really know until it's tested against a placebo. As the placebo effect tends to be quite pronounced on self reported cognitive function. And actually on cognitive function in general.
Noopept reddit reviews
It's about 60/40 when it comes to digging through reddit reviews of noopept. Once you exclude the people trying to sell it that is.
Generally positive, but a lot of people saying it simply didn't work. Although as most noopept supplements aren't 3rd party tested we can't even be sure these reviewers were actually getting noopept.
Noopept Side Effects
Users generally report Noopept is generally well-tolerated and has a low incidence of side effects. However, as there has only been one human trial we can't say for sure. There is also the issue that this supplement is rarely 3rd party tested so safety concerns are currently an issue.
However, as with any supplement or medication, individual responses may vary. Some users have reported mild side effects, including headaches, irritability, and gastrointestinal discomfort. These side effects are typically temporary and subside as the body adjusts to the supplement. It is important to start with a low dose when beginning Noopept supplementation and gradually increase as needed to minimize the risk of side effects.
Potential Noopept Benefits
The most commonly claimed benefit of Noopept is its ability to enhance cognitive function. It's been shown in animals to increase acetylcholine signaling and promoting the expression of NGF and BDNF. If that translate to humans then it's reasonable to claim Noopept improves learning, memory, and concentration. And users often report enhanced mental clarity, improved focus, and faster information processing. These commonly cited cognitive benefits make Noopept a popular choice among students, professionals, and individuals looking to boost their mental performance.
Anxiety and Depression Relief
In addition to its cognitive-enhancing effects, Noopept has shown promise in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression in rats with induced learned helplessness. By modulating neurotransmitter activity in the brain, Noopept can reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression. Many users have reported an overall improvement in their mood, leading to increased motivation, positivity, and overall well-being.
Brain Health and Neuroprotection
Another significant benefit of Noopept is its potential to protect the brain from damage and promote overall brain health. By increasing the expression of NGF and BDNF, Noopept supports the growth and survival of neurons. This neuroprotective effect can help prevent age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative conditions. Furthermore, Noopept has been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, further contributing to its neuroprotective effects.
Eradicating Brain Fog
Many individuals experience "brain fog," a state characterized by mental fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of mental clarity. Noopept can help eradicate brain fog by improving neurotransmission and increasing blood flow to the brain. [8,9] Users often report a noticeable reduction in mental fatigue, improved focus, and enhanced cognitive performance after taking Noopept.
Elevating Effects of Alzheimer's
While Noopept cannot cure Alzheimer's disease, it has shown potential in alleviating some of its symptoms in mice. By increasing NGF and BDNF expression and promoting neuroplasticity, Noopept can potentially slow down the progression of Alzheimer's disease and improve cognitive function in affected individuals. However, further research is needed to fully understand its efficacy in treating this condition.
Noopept Review Conclusion
Noopept, the cognitive-enhancing supplement developed in Russia, offers a range of potential benefits. From improving cognitive function and memory to relieving anxiety and depression, Noopept has gained popularity among those seeking to enhance their mental performance. Its neuroprotective properties and ability to eradicate brain fog make it a promising option for individuals looking to optimize their brain health.
Best Nootropics List
Whilst it's well tollerated as far as we know, there are far more well studied nootropics available that are as if not more effective.
The problem is that there's almost no evidence at all that it will work in humans, as such we would recommend one of the dozens of other nootropic supplements that have actually been demonstrated to work in clinical trials.
