Green Tea Extract
Green tea extract encourages weight loss as it boasts a natural form of caffeine, which can boost your metabolic rate, causing you to burn more calories, while offering an energy boost that can aid your exercise performance and help you build more lean mass and burn more fat.
Green tea also contains antioxidants called catechins, specifically EGCG.
This boosts lipolysis, causing you to turn stored fat into energy much faster, while offering other health benefits like regulating blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, aiding brain and heart functions, relieving stress, and aiding with certain other illnesses. (1).
Unfortunately, Phengold contains only 500 mg of green tea. As most sources of green tea have a 50% EGCG content and 400 to 500 mg of this catechin are required for maximum results, only half the optimal dose of green tea is present here (2).
L-Tyrosine
L-tyrosine is an amino acid vital for the regulation of neurotransmitters in the plasma. It can boost brain function, prevent physical and mental fatigue, reduce stress, and improve mental focus and mood, all of which are great for optimising exercise performance and weight loss (3).
However, to see these benefits, 500 to 2,000 mg of l-tyrosine must be consumed each day (4). With each dose of PhenGold boasting only 350 mg, it just isn't enough to have any real effect.
L-Theanine
L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is useful in fat loss supplements as it can boost mental focus, sleep quality, and relaxation. It can also help you train longer and harder, so you burn more calories and fat, while boosting metabolism, recovery, and muscular growth.
Other benefits of l-theanine include an ability to enhance the immune system, reduce anxiety and stress, and promote greater overall health and wellness (5).
However, the recommended dosage to achieve these benefits is between 100 and 200 mg (6). With Phengold containing 250 mg of l-theanine, it may be a little strong and could put you at risk of experiencing side effects like headaches, irritability, and nausea.
Rhodiola Rosea
Rhodiola rosea extract comes from the root of a flowering plant in the Arctic. It's been used in traditional medicine for treating anxiety, depression, fatigue, and stress, boosting metabolism, focus, cognitive functions, and exercise performance, and regulating blood sugar levels (7).
Unfortunately, of these benefits, it's only proven to benefit stress and fatigue. Even this is only when using doses of at least 288 mg, which is more than the 250 mg present in Phengold. It has also been linked to side effects like dizziness, dry mouth, and interactions with other drugs (8).
Caffeine
Caffeine is the world's most popular stimulant as it is extremely good at boosting energy levels and reducing physical and mental fatigue. This will help you to perform longer, more intense workout routines, which will burn more calories and enhance the weight loss process (9).
Caffeine also boosts your rates of lipolysis and metabolism. Lipolysis is the process that turns stored body fat into fatty acids that are used to make energy, while your metabolism determines how you process the foods you eat.
By helping your body absorb nutrients faster, encouraging the fat burning process, and helping you train harder, caffeine helps you lose weight from all angles. while improving your body health and composition at the same time.
For this to occur, it's recommended you consume 200 mg of caffeine a day (10). With Phengold containing 225 mg per dose, it may be beneficial for some people, but it will be too strong for others.
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper extract (capsaicin) is what gives peppers their distinctive heat and flavour and stimulates thermogenesis when consumed. Thermogenesis is a process where your internal body temperature rises, enhancing the rate that stored body fat is burned.
Your metabolism often increases at a similar rate too, causing even more calories and fat to be burned (11). Other benefits of capsaicin include appetite suppression and a reduction in pain and inflammation, which will help you stick to a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Unfortunately, studies suggest that a minimum of 500 mg of cayenne pepper extract must be consumed each day to see these results. With Phengold containing just 200 mg per serving, it is far less than required.
DMAE
Dimethylethanolamine (DMAE) is a choline derivative which can increase the production of neurotransmitters, help nerve cells send signals, improve memory and skin quality, and reduce mental fatigue and decline, inflammation, and hyperactivity (12).
DMAE is added to fat burners due to claims it enhances muscular contractions, recovery, motivation, mood, and overall physical performance. However, none of these benefits have been proven and its inclusion is based on hyperbole, rather than fact.
Green Coffee Extract
Green coffee extract comes from unroasted coffee beans and contains antioxidants, caffeine, and chlorogenic acid. As we have already seen, caffeine boosts your energy levels and promotes natural fat burning, while the antioxidants boost your health.
Chlorogenic acid is added to fat burners due to claims it can optimise blood pressure and blood glucose levels, as well as your metabolic rate (13). However, these benefits are still unsubstantiated and need more research before than can be believed.
Even if the benefits are true though, studies suggest you must consume 120 to 300 mg of chlorogenic acid to achieve them, which is greater that the entire 100 mg of green coffee present in Phengold.
Vitamins B3, B6, B12
B Vitamins are a group of small, water-soluble coenzymes that are essential for red blood cell production and cell metabolism, while offering a host of other health benefits.
Vitamin B3 promotes skin, joint, and organ health, lowers cholesterol, and boosts brain function. Vitamin B6 controls amino acid metabolism and the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters in the brain.
Vitamin B12 affects the metabolism of nutrients in your diet and all of the cells in your body, while encouraging the production of blood cells, bone marrow, and nerve sheaths.
Vitamins B6 and B12 are used in fat burners as they optimise your use of nutrients, limit fat storage, enhance protein synthesis, and boost energy levels. Vitamin B3, while useful for your health, has a limited effect on weight loss (14).
As PhenGold lumps all three vitamins into a blend and doesn't provide the dosages of each, it is therefore impossible to know if enough is present of each to be of any use.
