Brainpill was a promising supplement, it get’s a lot right, but the things it gets wrong it gets really wrong, the main issue being the inclusion of Vinpocetine an ingredient which is likely to be pulled from the market after the FDA issued a warning about it in 2019 and began in investigation into the ingredients use. It’s already banned in Canada, Australia and New Zeeland. [1]
Brainpill may well remove this ingredient, in which case we will update the review, but currently we can not recommend BrainPill, which would otherwise be a decent supplement.
That said even if Brainpill didn’t have this issue, it’s price point puts it in the premium range. Which means there are still a couple of better options on the market at it’s price point with Hunter Focus and Quallia Mind being significantly better alternatives for overall nootropics and if you’re looking for something to help with a specific issue then we suggest that you check out our best nootropics list.
In short do not buy brain pill.
Customers BrainPill Reviews
There weren’t many customers brain pill reviews though the few that were there mostly seemed to be legitimate. The reviews came to an average of 3.6* which was largely brought down by 1 star reviews experiencing serious brainpill side effects. This isn’t exactly surprising considering the ingredients issues that we’ve already mentioned. The positive reviews were also what we’d expect as a lot of the active ingredients in brainpill are known to be effective and are correctly dosed. That’s what makes this product so disappointing.
Brainpill Ingredients
Brainpills ingredients list is a mixed bag, some of the ingredients are great and dosed well, there’s a couple of random fillers in here, but the main issue is probably the Vinpocetine, which is currently under FDA review to be pulled from the market for being dangerous.
Cognizin – 250 mg is a branded version of Citicoline is a natural brain booster responsible for the production of energy in the brain’s frontal lobe. Citicoline contributes to the release of dopamine neurotransmitters, which has been shown to improve memory.
DHA Complex – 100 mg: (Docosahexaenoic acid) is a compound responsible for developing a large part of the brain mass. It has been shown to improve cognitive and neurotransmission functions.
Folic acid – 400 mcg: Also known as vitamin B9, it may regulate blood supply in the body and may improve the general health of the brain, though typically this really works for people who are deficient, which is relatively rare. We’ve also got the standard inclusion of B6 and B12 which help with energy.
Ginkgo Biloba Extract – 100 mg: An effective antioxidant that improves blood circulation and oxygen passage in the brain. Research shows that Bacopa Monnieri may eliminate memory problems and enhance the information-processing function of the brain and 100mg is a good dosage.
Phosphatidylserine – 100 mg: This is a fatty chemical that improves mental sharpness, attention, and brain function when taken over a long period, it’s well studied, well backed and is something we expect to see in all of the best nootropic supplements.
L - Tyrosine – 175 mg: This is an amino acid that plays an essential role in the synthesis of brain neurotransmitters, correctly dosed, solid ingredient.
L-Theanine – 100 mg: This is an amino acid and nootropic commonly found in green tea leaves that boost the function of your brain. Although it’s more commonly used for it’s mood boosting abilities, it’s still a decent ingredient.
Huperzia Serrata Extract – 5 mg: This is where Brainpill starts to go wrong and our brainpill review takes a turn for the worse. Extracted from the Chinese herb, Huperzia Serrata, this ingredient may prevent the degradation of neurotransmitters responsible for learning, the problem is the studies have been on rodents, and the dosage is too low either way.
Vinpocetine – 5 mg: This native German plant extract boosts blood flow, thinking ability, and memory. The issue isn’t it’s efficacy. It’s the fact that it’s borderline dangerous.
Brainpill Review Conclusion
If we removed the Vinpocetine BrainPill isn't a bad product, it’s just not a great one either, it does hit all the essentials, like PS, citicoline etc. But, it misses out on a lot of other ingredients that we expect from the best nootropic supplements.
It’s price point puts it up against the best premium nootropics and when we look at it like that BrainPill is something of a failure. If it was cheaper, and didn’t have the vinpocetine then it would be a solid product.
However, as of this moment in time we do not recommend Brain Pill and say that you should actively avoid it. And stop taking it if you have currently purchased it.
