Zleep Patches Ingredients
Melatonin 6mg: Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Supplementing with melatonin can help reset the body's internal clock and promote better sleep. The problem is that you need a dose this large at one go to be effective for most people, the slow release element isn't actually going to work here, and you're only going to really get the equivilant of 3mg. [2]
Potasium 66mg: So potassium can't actually be absorbed through the skin [3] so this inclusion is functionally pointless. Potassium can have benefits for sleep quality, but you're not going to get those from Zleep patches.
Magnesium 400mg: Magnesium may be absorbed through the skin, but, the science behind this doesn't look good. The studies confirming it were very shakey, most studies did not, and the only one that did was from bathing in epsom salts nightly and only showed elevated blood magnesium for a few weeks. It was also produced by people who sell epsom salts... and magnesium levels only rose mildly suggesting that absorption was not particularly high [4]. There are a lot of claims around this, but it seems that most have come from a conference slide. Yes one slide, and the study it quoted cannot be found. So, at best we're going to suffer from the same issue as melatonin, in that you simply won't get enough. This is a shame as magenesium is very good at improve sleep quality and falling asleep faster [5], especially in people with even a minor deficiency. If it could be effectively absorbed this way our Zleep Patches review would probably have been more complimentary.
Zinc 5mg: ZInc is more important for other hormones rather than sleep, it can be absorbed through the skin, [6] but unfortunately it's just not a very good ingredient for a sleep aid.
Zleep blend: Almost none of these ingredients can be absorbed through the skin at all, so we can functionally assume this doesn't matter. A lot of the ingredients do work well orally though, and are included in sleep aids that we actually recommend over Zleep patches. For example:
Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb known for its stress-relieving properties. It may help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, contributing to better sleep. But, it cannot be absorbed throught the skin. {7] The active compounds in ashwagandha have not been found in the blood stream after attempted skin diffiusion, another bad inclusion for Zleep. It is good for the skin apparently, and has a moisturizing effect, but that's not really what we're looking for here.
Chamomile: Chamomile is a popular herb used for its calming effects. It has been traditionally used to promote sleep and relaxation. But it only works when taken in very large capsule doses (multiple capsules) or as a tea.
L-Theanine: L-Theanine is an amino acid commonly found in green tea. It is known to promote relaxation and reduce stress, potentially improving sleep quality. The same issue, it doesn't pass through the skin, it does get into the tissue and can have anti inflammatory benefits, but not the sleep related ones. [8]
5-HTP: 5-HTP is a compound that the body naturally produces from the amino acid tryptophan. It plays a role in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and sleep. And can you guess what the issue is here? Yes, it doesn't get absorbed this way, again it is a good sleep aid though and one of the best for sleep aid supplements in general. [9]
