Solgar 7 Ingredients
Boswellia Serrata Extract (Resin)(As 5-Loxin Advanced) - 100 MG
Boswellia serrata extract (resin) is a type of gum that comes from the frankincense tree. It has been used in ayurvedic medicine for centuries, due to claims that it can reduce inflammation of the joints, symptoms of osteoarthritis, and even swelling of the brain (1).
The problem is, most studies on boswellia extract is an OK ingredient, but it's not the most well backed, it's normally included as an extra rather than as the lead ingredient in other joint supplements so Solgar no 7 comes up short here from the start.
Turmeric Root (Curcuma Longa) Extract (4:1 Equivalent Of 200 MG Of Root) - 50 MG
Turmeric root extract comes from the curcuma longa flowering plant and has been used for decades in traditional medicines around the world, due to the fact it contains curcumin, but it's only about 20% of the turmeric extract.
Curcumin is a proven anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that can neutralise free radicals, preventing them from causing damage to our bones, cartilage, and organs, and helping us to maintain healthy joints (2).
Unfortunately, 500 mg of curcumin must be consumed daily to enjoy these benefits. With Solgar No 7 containing just 50 mg per serving, it is far too weak to have any effect at all.
White Willow Bark Extract (Salix Spp) (5:1 Equivalent Of 175 MG Of Bark) - 35 MG
White Willow bark extract is used in traditional medicine as it contains salicin, a chemical similar to the active ingredient in aspirin. It is believed to ease muscle, back, and knee pain, arthritis symptoms, fevers and flus, and various other types of medical condition.
The problem is, all of these claims are based on hyperbole, and there is no scientific evidence to support any of them (3). This means the presence of willow bark extract in Solgar No 7 is unlikely to do anything but take up space in the capsule.
Ginger Root (Zingiber Officinale) Extract (4:1 Equivalent Of 140 MG Of Root) - 35 MG
Ginger root extract is a common dietary supplement ingredient as it is a potent antioxidant and inti-inflammatory. It prevents oxidative damage and maintains joint health, lowers cholesterol levels, enhances the immune system, and encourages better digestive health.
Ginger can even boost the bioavailability of the other ingredients in the supplement, making them more effective and easier to absorb (4). The issue is, these effects require 1 gram of ginger to be consumed daily to occur.
As Solgar No 7 has just 35 mg of ginger root extract per serving, it simply won't have any effect.
UC-II Standardized Cartilage (Total Collagen) - 40 MG (10 MG)
UC-II standardized cartilage is a type of undenatured type ii collagen, which is found in fish and poultry. Research suggests it can provide cartilage support, improving its production and elasticity to ease painful or stiff joints. There are two major issues though.
Firstly, UC-II is considered to be one of the least effective types of collagen at producing these effects. Then there is the issue that 40 mg is the minimum daily dose required to produce them (5).
This means the 10 mg of total collagen present in each serving of Solar No 7 will be of no use. Perhaps even worse though, is the fact that they have advertised the 40 mg of cartilage used, to try and trick people into believing a sufficient dose is present.
Pepper Spice Complex Cayenne Powder (Capsicum Annuum [Fruit]), BioPerine Black Pepper Extract (Piper Nigrum [Fruit]) - 27 MG
BioPerine and cayenne powder are both traditional pepper spices, coming from black pepper and cayenne pepper, respectively.
Black pepper extract is used only to enhance bioavailability, to improve the absorption of the other ingredients and make them more effective. Cayenne pepper extract can help fight joint stresses and inflammation, while also improving your metabolism and preventing fat storage.
However, you must take at least 20 mg of BioPerine and 30 mg of cayenne pepper extract each day for these effects to occur (6)(7). That means it is impossible for enough cayenne powder to be present in Solgar No 7 to be useful, and very unlikely either is used in a sufficient dose.
Vitamin C (As Ester C Calcium Ascorbate) - 100 MG
Vitamin c (ascorbic acid) is an essential, water soluble vitamin, found in various fruits, veg, and other foods. It is considered one of the main collagen building blocks, while also helping to produce neurotransmitters in the brain.
Its presence will accelerate the repair of damaged tissue, helping to maintain sensitive joint cartilage, natural joint motion, and joint flexibility. It also boosts bone, muscle, and tooth strength, nutrient absorption, and immune functions, and prevents many diseases.
While the 100 mg of vitamin c present in a serving of Solgar No 7 is around the recommended daily value, studies suggest supplemental usage in this range is unnecessary, as you get similar intakes from food.
They say a dietary supplement must contain around 2,000 mg per dose to produce any notable benefits, meaning the amount present here is just 5% of what is required to be of any use (8).
